COLLEEN

The next morning, I wake up rested. It’s quiet in Ben’s bedroom, and there isn’t any noise coming from outside either. I’m lying next to him, my body pressed into his hard one, and my head nestled in the crook of his shoulder while he has an arm loosely draped around me.

I can’t believe I slept so peacefully in this position. I’ve always liked to have my space, so it’s odd to feel so comfortable like this.

Luna’s purring has me giving up on my nice spot and rolling over to see that she’s found her own comfortable spot on my unused pillow.

“Morning, cutie,” I whisper.

When Ben stirs a little, I glance over my shoulder. But he doesn’t wake up, and I turn around again, propping myself on my elbow so I can look at him. And this man is something to look at. Tousled blond hair, strong shoulders, chiseled abs… Definitely something to look at.

I still can’t believe I agreed to stay in his room. It sounds like nothing, but to me, it’s a huge step toward something I swore to myself I wouldn’t go for. I agreed anyway. I even let him make some room in his drawers for the clothes Camryn is going to bring back from my place. Do I still hear alarm bells ringing so loud in my head that I wouldn’t be surprised to end up with a headache soon? Yes. Am I going to put some distance between us? No. I guess I’ll share a room with him while I’m here. As for what will happen once I leave…

Once I leave. To go where? That’s still an unknown, but there’s no way I’m going to find a job around here. That’d be a miracle, and I’m not lucky enough these days to be blessed with a miracle.

What’s weird is that the possibility of looking for a job here is even crossing my mind. And what’s even weirder is that it doesn’t cause my stomach to wrench with painful cramps.

Speaking of jobs, I almost groan out loud when I remember that I haven’t even checked my emails since I got here. Cam texted yesterday saying that my phone was no longer where I dropped it. No idea if it’s CJ who has it, or if someone picked it up, but either way, it’s gone. Blane tried to locate it in case it had been turned back on, but no such luck there. He also tried to listen to my voicemail, but the thing has been wiped clean. It’s best if I don’t listen to my boss’s harsh firing anyway. One thing is obvious; there’s no way I still have a job.

Reaching for Ben’s nightstand, I grab his phone and sit carefully, quickly open my mailbox, and start to scroll through my emails. Only one from my boss. I open it and wince. If I had any hope left to get my job back, it’s all gone. I’m officially jobless.

Sighing, I write a short email back explaining that I had a family emergency.
